Are you familiar with Paris?
Which arrondissement would you advise me and my sweetie to stay in for our first trip to Paris?
Our dreamy ideals are to stay in an Apt or quaint hotel we are within walking distance to the Sienne and perhaps other sights. Also is within walking distance to places like cafes, boulagaries, framagaries, outdoor market, perhaps a wine bar.
A friend suggested the Ils St-Louis and/or the Latin Quarter.
A "penny" for your thoughts? :>)
Thank you!

Re: Arrondissements in Paris
Sat, February 5, 2005 - 10:06 PMHands down, my favorite is the Marais (4th arrondisement). Centrally located, close to a number of Metro lines. Walking distance to the Ille de la Cite and the Ille St. Louis. Fantastic night scene, lots of quaint little restaurants. The Pompidou & the Picasso museums are in the neighborhood.

A cute, beautifully located hotel that is not very expensive is the Axial Beaubourg close to the Hotel de Ville.

Re: Arrondissements in Paris
Mon, February 7, 2005 - 2:52 PMI'll second the recommendation for the Marais. Paris is a great city for walking, you really can't go wrong with any of the centrally located neighborhoods. Other great walking areas are:
- Quartier Latin (5e)
- the area around the St. Sulpice church (6e) -- make sure you go to the Pain Poilane bakery -- awesome artisanal breads.
- the Montmartre area (18e)
have fun! -

Re: Arrondissements in Paris
Wed, February 9, 2005 - 3:56 PMI stayed for a summer in a pension across the street from the Luxembourg gardens. I forget the arrondissement (I believe the 7th) and it was absolutely lovely. Close to St. Michelle, the Latin Quarter, the Sorbonne, some great shopping. Plus I think the Jardins du Luxembourg are incredibly gorgeous!!! -

Re: Arrondissements in Paris
Thu, February 10, 2005 - 10:42 AMStay in the 4th or the 7th, for sure. Some spots in the 6th (arty & academic quarter near Sorbonne and Notre-Dame) are beautiful also. But watch out for seedier/cheaper hotels on Rue de Rivoli in the 4th...it's a great hood on some blocks and can feel sketchy on others. Rue de Rivoli is also huge and can be loud - try to stay on a little side street instead. Preferably one with cobblestones.
And be sure to go to Au Petit Fer a Cheval cafe in the Marais! Yummy food and classic ambience to boot.
Have a great time -

Re: Arrondissements in Paris
Thu, February 10, 2005 - 2:26 PMThanks to everyone for the great advise. Considering everything, we ended up renting a small but very charming apartment on Ils St-Louis, and to my delight, we got a good rate. I can't wait!
Thanks again!
