I have had one...but it was a lot of work and very hard to get and very tricky to keep.

But here is the best way to get it if it is what your heart desires....

The bestway to get an IATAN Card is to apply for a license to sell tours in one of the states that offers them (which is not an easy task) . Then apply for a membership with NACTA (travelsellers.com). Which Tommie and Joanie Ogg offer a IATAN number through.

On your own after you have established a travel business and obtained a certain amount of sales for several years then you can apply for a number.

IATAN discounts are really not that great and you can generally negotiate your own group discounts etc with the hotels that you plan to stay at far in advance. Or if it is for personal reasons hotels.com priceline.com offer the same discounts and somewhat better prices at times.

The one advantage I did see to it is that you can get really goos discounts with carnival cruise lines. It is a ton of work and there are a lot of gimmics out there.

Also if you are organizing tours etc.. there are many states that require you have the license to sell tours...whether it is a self interest, church group, non-profit or profit business...many of these states will allow people to do group leadership tours etc...but God help them if something goes wrong...because the laws are clearly wriiten in the Department of Agriculture instructions for these states...and though not very well enforced they can be..and I would seriously think about how much to trust the IRS that they will not come after you at some point if you do not go through all of the steps.

I have found that I can obtain better discounts for myself and family without the card or affliation and it it far too much work if you do not intend to make a career of it. ...and lets face it Travel Agencies are not doing extremely well at this time.

If you are really interested in this I would recommend purchasing these books:
