as soon as you land, take the bus south to yelapa. it is a small village tucked in a cove, and fromt he bus you will need to take a small motorboat to get to it. you can stay in nice homes by the week or month, some small lodgings, and sometimes camping on the beach. good people live there year-round, and there are tourist boats coming for day trips only, so they are in and out. the beach is small stones, there is snorkeling at the points of the cove, and a waterfall a nice little walk away.

I just got back from Vallarta, Sayulita and Yelapa! It was a great trip, very easy to get around by taxi or bus. Puerta Vallarta's old town has tons of great restaurants ranging in all different types of cuisines. Beware of american prices, though. We stayed at Casa de Roger, medium budget, fifty bucks a night, very clean, right in the heart of the old town. We got a ride north to a little sufing town, Sayulita. Beautiful! Perfect little waves, great accomodations and lots of single travellers. Have you heard of travelbuddies.com? Great way to connect. Then for the final five days of our little trip, we took a boat from Hotel Rosita to Yelapa. It cost us eleven american dollars. You can get a boat or water taxi from the peir about a mile north of Hotel Rosite for around the same price. Don't buy a round trip ticket. It can get confusing trying to find your exact boat for the ride back to P. Vallarta. There are plenty of water taxis coming and going every day til 4:30 or so in the afternoon. Casa Isabella is a great place to stay. go to the Oasis for their delicious empanadas, and mango margaritas! You can camp or stay at the Oasis as well. Have fun! Puerta Vallarta is a fun city, but you may not want to spend ALL of your time there. There is so much to explore within a short distance in every direction from there.

Oh, no... I just saw this and I fear I'm too late...

Don't stay in Nuevo Vallarta... TOURISTY and you might as well be in the U.S.

Here is a great hotel: www.conchaschinas.com/

It's reasonably priced and your room will open onto a balcony or patio where you can see and hear he waves crashing on the shore... nice... it's not a swimming beach, but it's beautiful and a bit more out of the way. The cab ride to get down the hill and to the swimming beach is about six - 10 pesos, so it's not bad. The closest beach is the gay beach, but you can go a little further North if you don't want to hang out there.

There are rip tides, so be sure to be careful out there.

I found the old town part of Puerto Vallarta to be very charming. I love how they still make much of the fact that Liz Taylor and Richard Burton owned a house there in the '60s -- which you can tour, by the way.
