US Travel from Ca to FL (my first real travel trip)

topic posted Wed, October 31, 2007 - 8:36 AM by  Sierra
I know this may not be considered a radical travel trip but it is my first major travel trip where I will be traveling just to travel. No moving from one city to anther or weekend trips.... I will be traveling from Santa Monica California to Jacksonville, Florida than to the Keys and soon…. No more delays I've been putting this off for far too long. I'm making my plans and persistently trying to gain the little things I need to ensure my trip is successful and I'm safe.

... and all will be documented at www.sierranighttide.com/

Hopefully live soon!!!!

woohoo

any suggestions, ideas, tips, misc?

  • I've done a lot of this " I think I'll go over there" type of travel in the U.S.. now I go from aeria to aeria for 2-3 years at a time . on my way to J'ville for a couple of years, as we speak. How will you be traveling, car, camper, train, bus etc ?
    • Last year I bought a mini SUV (with a hitch) specifically for my trip. Than my job offered me a new position that I just couldn’t turn down. However, my job has become stale and it’s not as rewarding as it first was…. Plus I have chronic asthma and the government banned the new production of the only medicine that works for me (yes I’ve tried everything and natural healthcare is outrageously expensive) so as soon as it’s gone my expiration date stops crawling and starts running….. so this is something I have to do :) In addition to my website I'm planning on setting up vendor booths for Raves, Costume festivals and Playa / Burning Man type festivals or events.
      • I just made it to J'ville. I'm looking forward to getting to know the town, seams pretty cool, lots to do, interesting mix 'o' people. Are you going to tow a small camper, do the motel thing, or couch surf ? You can mesg me direct, if you want to stop over here.
        • I haven’t been able to find an inexpensive camper so I’m going to
          Camp
          Couch Surf (www.couchsurfer.com)
          Sleep in my car
          Occasional motels

Let me know about Jacksonville, I’ve read about some really cool stuff in the area. After Jsville, I’m heading down to the Keys – can’t pass up that opportunity!
          • When you get down to the Keys, check out Bahia Honda state beach. If I remember correctly, we were strongly encouraged to have reservations in advance for camping, but it was well worth it. Contact Florida state parks for more info. The campsite we stayed in was forested and secluded and just a short walk to/from this fabulous beach:

We also camped at another state beach on Long Key and a private campground called Boyd's just outside of Key West but that was the loudest campground *ever*. We were rudely awaken at sunrise by touch and go landings of the quite nearby naval air base.

Have a great trip! Safe travels.
  • I hope you trip was wonderful. I traveled from the east coast out to the southwest and the views were amazing. My most recent trip was to the Grand Canyon. I took a tour for the first time with Open Road Tours. I had an amazing time! We went through the Navajjo Indian reservation which was very interesting! The guide was very educated about the rock formations and the history of the southwest as well as the Navajos. I also got a ton of fantastic pictures! I was not able to go on the helicopter tour, but I will go back and definately do that. I highly suggest it! Where would you suggest that you have been?
