Just wondering if anyone's done some extended travel (several months to a year) while still having a home and mortgage to pay. How did you handle getting all your bills paid and what other things did you have to consider?

Re: Extended travel
Tue, January 8, 2008 - 12:22 PMwell my best friend is doing it now. she's renting out her house. luckily it's to our other very good friend, who then looked for a roommate online, but she still trusts the friend to look after things. she doesn't quite break even but it's not too bad. she's in berkeley so it's easy to find seasonal renters just for the school year or the summer. -

Re: Extended travel
Fri, January 11, 2008 - 5:55 AMI did it, by apartment swapping with another person where was my place of travel. Another friend did it through an agency that just paid her rent and gave her some extra. Another friend subleted and worked as they went along doing what every small jobs as they went along.

Re: Extended travel
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 8:58 AMWe just got back from a year's travel. We rented the house to my partner's grown children who took care of the basics. We set our mortgage on automatic payment and set up a fairly simple set of automated accounts. It all took a bit of planning for some of the special cases (automobile registration, property taxes) but mostly went quite well.
