Hello! Was wondering if anyone here has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. A group of friends and I are looking at going in late 2008 or early 2009. We just got back from a great trip to Mt. Etna and are eager to visit Africa!
I see lots of safari travel options available that can be organized by various types of travel agents. I'm wondering if one is allowed to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro without being in an organized group. For example, can we pack everything we need, get maps and GPS devices, do a bunch of homework, select the short route (probably Marangu), and go? The organized expeditions include transport to the beginnings of each of the routes and, often, staying in huts along the way. Is it possible to hire independent transportation from, say, Nairobi into Tanzania and down to the beginnings of the trails?
We are only just starting to do our homework on this, but any information you have would be helpful. :)
Thanks so much!
Hugs,
SistaWeotch

Re: Mt. Kilimanjaro
Thu, October 25, 2007 - 3:23 PMHello SistaWeotch,
I just joined this tribe - hi all! Are you still interested in doing Kilimanjaro? Although we did not have enough time to include a Kili ascent during our 4-week stay in Tanzania, we learned a little about it.
We flew in and out of Nairobi and found it easy to arrange independent transportation from Nairobi to Arusha in Northern Tanzania. I'm sure we could have just as easily gone all the way to Moshi, which is the largest Tanzanian town near Kili, to the south of the mountain.
It is my understanding that you must be accompanied by a "certified guide" (I think "certified" has a looser connotation than we might expect) to climb the mountain. I'm sure a guide could easily be found in Moshi or in Arusha, which we dubbed Safari Central - very easy to coordinate expeditions to surrounding national parks and reserves.
We were told that we should allow 3 weeks for the complete Kilimanjaro journey, which we could not afford on our time schedule, as we also did a 5-day safari to Ngorogoro, Serengeti, Lake Manyara, and Tarangire, 5 days in Lushoto (amazing! highly recommended) in the Usumbara Mountains, then 10+ days in Pemba and Zanzibar.
Hope this helps some...
