Hey....Just a question for ya all about air fares....Generally how far in advance do you book it? I have been watching air fares and they just took a huge leap, I'm wondering if that was seasonal or fuel costs or what? I'm leaving for Europe on Oct. 1 st, so in your educated travelers opinions when should I snag the golden ticket? I would love for them to come down a bit.....I always get the timing thing screwed up.

Re: Question....Air Fares...
Tue, July 10, 2007 - 6:16 AMThe irony is, the friggin Internet SHOULD be making this airfare-purchasing process so much easier, user-friendly, logical and transparent ... yet it tends to run by blind chaos governed by total luck. All of the old rules (eg, buy as early as possible, never go to a travel agent, deal directly with the airline and ask for specials, etc) no longer apply. I've been ROOTED to this chair since LATE JUNE trying to find decent airfare to the Balkans, and I've watched the fare on the same flights soar one day, plummet the next, then soar again. I'm convinced that there is no rhyme or reason to any of this. I finally abandoned the White Whale of "I want to fly there AS CHEAPLY AS I CAN" and, instead, decided just how expensive of a ticket I was willing to buy ... and then I pounced on whatever I could find that fell below that number. Sure, there are a lot of last-minute deals ... if you've got the stomach and the schedule flexibility to play that game. If I were you, I would come up with that threshold amount that you are WILLING and ABLE to spend (not HAPPY, just WILLING), and then hit all of those online cheap-fare websites. In the end, I liked ebookers, skyscanner and opodo ... I've never had any luck with the big ones (expedia, kayak, etc). Good luck. -

Re: Question....Air Fares...
Tue, July 10, 2007 - 7:57 AMThanks Geoff.....I'll try those sites, I have never heard of them, I thought I had hit them all. It is driving me bats, I'm going to do what you suggested and thry and find that point I'm comfortable with. Yeah I have been rooted to this chair searching, it's like my hobby now, I'm obsessed with this...duh, so sick! Haa haaa I did find out from a friend at Air France they are having fall specials come up around the middle of July so keep your eyes peeled everyone!.I am taking a month , and had to cut down where I was going because of the damned air fares....I wanted to do Kolkata, Madrid, Marrekesh, Barcelona, Paris, and Munich.....I think I will knock out India and save it for next year.

Re: Question....Air Fares...
Tue, July 10, 2007 - 8:09 AMAirFrance? That just reminded me ... British Airways is having a great deal, very cheap flight to Heathrow from majoy US airports, and it includes one free night per person in a London hotel. We got round-trip tickets from Dulles for around $700 each ... plus two free nights in a four-star hotel in Hyde Park. Anyway, from London, you can fly Ryan Air for practically pennies to a whole lot of those Mediterranean locations that you listed. Only problem is, it may or may not be a summer promotional special. Can't remember. Check out their special offers on their website ... if you can stand to be in front of the feckin monitor for another moment longer, arghhhh. Good luck and safe traveling! -

Wed, July 11, 2007 - 7:45 AMGeof....Yeah I gotcha yah...arrghhhhhh
They are probably having such a special because of the terrorists threats, that always works well to lower an air fare or two. That sounds like a deal in London for the hotel. Hotels in London are so expensive, especially now the pund has killed the dollar, they are so small and nothing...their rooms I mean. Where are you going? for how long?
Have a good one....Krishna
