So my best friend moved to Germany in Jan. (Husband is in the air force) Anyhoo, I'm going to visit her for Christmas for about two weeks. I don't want to spend my whole vacation in Europe stuck on an American Military base (kinda defeats the purpose of being in another country)...so....my idea was to fly into say Rome or Paris, have her meet me there and hang out for a while, then train to her place and spend some time in Frankfurt as well. The problem is that she has a 6 yr old son. So what is there to do in Europe (I'm not set on which cities yet) with a child? I mean they have children there too...so there has to be something right? I want some "culture" but I don't want the kid to have NOTHING to do either.

Re: They have children in Europe right????
Thu, February 14, 2008 - 12:50 PMwell, if you're asking about tourist attractions, i can't help ya, but if you're asking about mucking about, for sure. travel is the best school for kids~opens their eyes wide wide wide, and deepens their understanding. so i would say have a walk about, meander through local neighborhoods and in markets, simple cafes, etc., see what the locals are up to. and for a special treat, when you spot local kids being kids, let the little guy go and join in. language won't be a barrier in about a minute. only problem may be when he begs to return to see his friends every day for the rest of the trip ;)

I am trying to remember... there is one country in europe that *does NOT* allow children... infact... they send out the "Child-Catcher" who can actually smell children - he puts all of the children into jail... I'm trying to remember where I heard of it...
oh yeah... It was featured in the docu-drama "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" the country is Vulgaria.

Re: They have children in Europe right????
Fri, February 15, 2008 - 9:36 PMParis is a fantastic city with kids. There are playgrounds everywhere (including a fabulous one at Luxembourg Gardens), a really cool science museum, and even the Louvre has areas that kids will enjoy. I wrote up some notes about what we enjoyed with our kids at www.deliciousbaby.com/travel/...e/paris/
Rome is kid friendly in a different way. In Italy, kids are integrated into every day life. There are squares throughout the old city where kids can kick a ball and kids are welcome in restaurants. There aren't very many kid specific activities in Rome (or the other Italian cities I've been too) but with some effort you can probably get him interested in the ruins, and you can always use gelato to get you through the rough spots! Our last trip to Rome was in 2006 and I wrote up some notes about things to do with kids at www.deliciousbaby.com/travel/italy/rome/
Hope you have a fun trip!

Re: They have children in Europe right????
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 6:35 AMThanks. I always picture Europe being so full of culture and art and atiques and I just can't picture dragging a child from the US to all of that. (And yes, I do know they have children in Europe....) I was also worried about cultural differences when it comes to children. Americans try not to take their kids with them to "adult" (not smutty) venues like resturantes and museums so I just wanted to know where it would be okay to take him. Plus, I wanted some ammunition for my friend when she starts the whole..."we can't take Johnny because...." argument. I don't have kids so I don't really know what to do with them either.
