Biking then Biking

Sometime between the dates of late November and early January I will be leaving on an bicycle expedition...taking a train from Portland, OR to southern California then riding my bike to Mexico...once I'm in Mexico I've been considering purchasing a motor bike of some sort - i.e. a motorcycle, mo-ped, etc. and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions - along the lines of what is the best motor bike to purchase and if anyone has ever done anything like this, maybe some advice on how to go about it...my final destination is S.America where I will be spending 6 months to a year exploring, so I would like something reliable to a degree but not super expensive. This is all just one big brainstorm - I'm still considering riding my bicycle the whole way, but am open to other ideas as well...muchas gracias

Ummm.... do you have experience riding a motorcycle?

If not, I'd recommend against it. Or at least I'd recommend first taking a motorcycle safety course like the one that California offers, before trying to go anywhere on a motorcycle.

And why don't you want to bike from Oregon to Mexico? There is some stunning scenery in between. Some of the most amazing anywhere in the world. :-)

ummmm...I'm not biking from Oregon to Mexico because its going to be too cold when I leave in November/December. I do plan on doing that trip but I'm not able to leave until that time, so it will have to late for a later date.

I have about 6 months until i leave on my trip, so in that time I plan on hopefully getting my motorcycle license and becoming more acclimated.

      Do you have any experience?

Experience with that? Motorcycling? Motorcycle trips? Bicycle trips?

Actually I have experience with all of them. :-) Though, my bike trip was cancelled after only a few days because I found I like drinking with Spainards far more than I liked cycling through the European countryside.

You can ask in the motorcyle tribe, for a 2nd opinion, but I think that they'll all tell you the same thing. Don't just get your license. TAKE THE SAFETY COURSE. Motorcycling is a bit dangerous, but you can very much minimize the risk by knowing what you're doing.

I did a quick search. Oregon does offer motorcycle safety courses.

This is why I know that bike trip I have planned in the back of my head will never work...Your post made me laugh. Thanks.
